Take Home News 24th Sunday

24th Sunday Of Year C

Today all three readings are about mercy. Mercy us the gift that God has given us to recover what was lost, and so mercy enables us to escape the past and find a new future. Mercy is not like a medicine, which we may take for a while and then, being healed, are able to dispense with. It is more like the air that we breathe. We breathe it in and we breathe it out. Mercy is the atmosphere of heaven. These final three months of the Year of Mercy provide an opportunity for us to reflect on God’s great mercy for us, encouraging us to have mercy on others.

Your Clergy

This week we say farewell to Fr David Burke and thank him for the great pastoral care he has given. We wish him well in his new appointment at St Francis de Sales in Tottenham. We look forward to seeing him again on Friday 28th October, when he will celebrate the 7.30pm Mercy Mass which will be followed by a get-together in the Parish Centre.

We welcome Rev Carlos Quito to the parish. He is a deacon who will be ordained to the priesthood next summer. He will be able to work full-time in the parish, having completed his studies.

What Can a Deacon Do?

A deacon is one who has a specific role in service, just as the first deacons had a role assisting the apostles in the early church. Liturgically although a deacon cannot celebrate Mass, he has the role of proclaiming the Gospel and assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion. He can celebrate Baptisms, Weddings, and Funerals (without Mass) but he cannot administer the Sacrament of the Sick. The deacon can bless people and objects but would not be able to sign Mass Cards.

Arrangements for Mondays

Mass on Mondays will be at 7.30am. Any Mass intentions originally booked for the 9am Mass on Mondays have been transferred to 7.30am. Deacon Carlos will lead a Communion Service on Mondays at 9am. This will include the Liturgy of the Word (the readings of the day) followed by Holy Communion, under one kind. The service will be preceded by Morning Prayer at 8.40am.

And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary

WATCH THIS SPACE—J.D.S

Mrs Smith decided she needed a good watchdog. Having seen an advertisement for a thorough-bred police dog at a very reasonable price, she sent off a cheque and asked for the dog to be delivered. A few days later the dog arrived - the shaggiest mongrel she had ever seen. Furious, she telephoned the advertiser “How on earth can you call that old mongrel a thorough-bred police dog?” “But he is, Madam”, came the reply. “Don’t be deceived by his looks, he’s in the Secret Service.”
