TAKEHOMENEWS 14TH JULY 2024

15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

The Grace of Our Calling

God called us for a purpose: to live in Christ and be channels of grace to others. This truth sustains us, especially when faced with challenges not to be cowered by our inadequacies nor lured by the quest for people’s approval. Therefore, St Paul, in today’s second reading, reminds us that we are here by God’s choice and purpose.

Prophets Amos in today’s first reading, demonstrates the power of this truth.  God’s people rejected God’s word and his Prophet, Amos. But prophet Amos remained faithful to his call to be a channel of grace to others. Interestingly, rather than change his message to be accepted, he remembered that his call was of God and not of the world. Thus, he gave them the prophecy (God’s word). They rejected it and consequently fell to Assyria in 722 BC.

Like the twelve in today’s Gospel, we have been entrusted with the message of salvation. There will be challenges and hostilities, and we may feel inadequate at the enormity of our mission.  We are to remember who has called us, and for what purpose. The Grace of our calling makes up for our inadequacies. Like Prophet Amos, we must remember that it is through our faithfulness to our calls, that the world can be healed.  O Lord, in difficulties, may we never forget that the grace of our calling is stronger. Amen.
