TAKEHOMENEWS 30TH JUNE 2024

13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

This Sunday is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. We reflect on how God uses the weak to confound the strong to show that transcendent power is of the Lord (2 Corinthians 4:6-7). As a Church, we stand on an apostolic foundation wounded by human frailty but strengthened only by the power of grace. We are reminded that our weaknesses and imperfections can be transformed by grace.

St. Peter was full of zeal but denied Jesus three times. Ignorantly, he obstructed God’s plan. Hence, Jesus rebuked him and said, Satan get behind me. After Jesus' death, he abandoned Christ’s mission and went back to fishing. St. Paul on the other hand violently persecuted the Church. Therefore, he considered himself the least of the apostles (1 Corinthians 15:9-11).

God’s grace, however, triumphed in their lives. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says to Peter, “You are Peter, and, on this Rock, I will build my Church. The gates of hell will not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). Despite their flaws, Saints Peter and Paul became pillars of our faith. Thus, St Paul acknowledges the power of grace upon his life and says, “His grace toward me was not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:10). As we celebrate these two pillars of the Church, we depend on the transforming power of God’s Grace.
