19th Sunday in ordinary time year b
The Lord Renews our Strength
Like every journey of love, faith’s journey can sometimes be challenging. The strong may even grow tired, but those who wait upon the Lord shall have their strength renewed like Elijah’s was in this Sunday’s first reading. Elijah had defended the true faith and overpowered the false prophets. Queen Jezebel wanted him killed. He ran for his life. After a day’s journey into the wilderness to Mount Horeb to encounter the Lord, he despaired and wished to die. But the Lord fed him until he could reach the Mount of Horeb.
We too often pass through wildernesses of troubles of life. As Elijah ran to the Mount of Horeb to encounter God, we too should always run to the Mountain of Prayer where we encounter God. There, God sustains us through his word drawing us deeper to a place of encounter with him. Through Christ’s Body, we are spiritually nourished and receive a pledge of eternal life as Jesus tells us in this Sunday’s Gospel.
Therefore, Lord, in moments of despair, may we run to you in prayer, waiting until you speak to restore our hopes. By your Word and Body, sustain us on our journey, renewing our hopes and strength as we prayerfully anticipate the eternal mountain of Heaven.
