SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
This Sunday's Gospel is St Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes and is sometimes called the 'Sermon on the Plain', since Jesus preaches on a level place rather than a mount. But, as in St Matthew, Jesus turns the accepted world view on its head; 'Blessed are you who are poor, you who are hungry, you who weep, and you who are hated, excluded, reviled and spurned'. This would have been almost heresy for his listeners but the next part 'woe to you who are rich and full, who laugh and of whom others speak well' must have enraged many, as it enrages people even today. These words still sting because they remind us that Jesus sided with those on the margins, those who suffer, those whose presence makes others uncomfortable; for example, see Pope Francis' recent letter to the Bishops of the USA and I recommend Edwina Gateley's book 'Christ in the Margins'. With every blessing Fr Eugene Curran CM.
