18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B
The Enduring Food
In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses the crowd that followed him for physical nourishment, urging them, “Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for the food that endures to eternal life.” This echoes the message from the first reading in Exodus, where God's people, fixated on their physical hunger, missed seeing God's broader plans and purposes for them.
While working for our daily sustenance is indeed a gift from God, Jesus’ words call us to pursue a deeper spiritual life that prioritises God's will above all. Our true spiritual nourishment is found in living according to God's will. As Jesus says, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me” (Jn 4:32-34). Jesus himself is the revelation of God's will, which truly satisfies us, promising that “Whoever comes and believes in me will never hunger or thirst.”
Jesus invites us to seek a profound relationship with him, rather than merely focusing on the blessings he provides. Doing God’s will is our true work and spiritual sustenance (Jn 6:29), through which all our other works are sanctified, empowering us to live a victorious Christian life. Lord, in all our endeavours, help us to choose your will, the enduring food.
