TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B 2024

God’s Loving Plan for Marriage from the Beginning.

God always invites us to return to his loving and eternal plan and purpose.  In moments of confusion and contradictory opinions, the scripture invites us to return to the ancient path that we may find rest for our souls” (Jeremiah 6:16).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of God’s loving plan for us as it pertains to the covenant of matrimony.  Hence, when the people argued about whether to divorce, Jesus reminded them that from the beginning, it was not so.  Jesus, took us back in time to reveal God’s intention for marriage, a loving plan of a profoundly fulfilling, flourishing and permanent companionship.

The covenantal nature of marriage is such that a rupture in this communion once marked by love, couldn’t go without deep-seated pains and hurts. Thus, Jesus says that it was never God’s plan for us from the beginning.

However, this high calling to married life is only possible by the Grace of God, who makes the impossible possible.  Therefore, we pray for married couples, those whose marriages are strained, those for whom it has ended in breakdown and all affected by bad experiences of married life.  Into your hands Lord, we commend all marriages. Lord, help us, the Church to accompany them with compassion as Jesus would. Amen
